With the death of terrorist Osama Bin Laden, college campuses everywhere rejoiced and came together as one to celebrate their pride in the United States of America. While some may view the celebrations as over the top, it definitely brought campuses together. Here are a few examples:

New Underpass Causing Problems

Posted: April 26, 2011 by mikenic1 in Uncategorized

This summer, Marist College, along with the State of New York, plans to build a new underpass for the students of Marist College. The underpass is set to be built in between the Donnelly Building and the main gate.  The underpass will have many positive benefits for both the students of Marist College and the residents of the City of Poughkeepsie. The underpass will improve the safety of the students of Marist, while also improving traffic on Route 9.  The project is set to cost about $8.6 million dollars, and the cost will be split between the State of New York and Marist College. This has some residents upset, however. Many people in New York believe that Marist should pick up the entire bill because of the wealth they has developed over the years. The project will cost New York a lot of money in a time when New York is struggling to find money. Tax payers want New York to spend the money on things such as education and other public projects. The underpass is set to be built this summer and will have a major impact on the Marist College campus.

Rex Ryan, the often outspoken head coach of the New York Jets, is set to release his new book called, “Play Like You Mean It,”. Ryan wrote the book after only two years as head coach of the Jets, however, the book is filled with interesting stories about his short, but successful time with the Jets. The book provides an in depth look at Ryan’s time with the Jets and documents his unique style of coaching and running the team. The book also provides information about Ryan’s relationship with both current and former Jets.   Ryan does not hold back his feelings about some of his former players that he did not get along with. Ryan also talks about some of his public feuds with players and coaches outside of the New York Jet organization. He shares his true feelings about star quarterback Tom Brady, and also describes his current relationship with Wes Welker and Tony Dungy, who he had fought with in the past.  Along with his relationship with players and coaches around the NFL, Ryan also talks about his goals for the future. The book does not hold back, but who would expect anything less for Rex Ryan.

New York Cities nightmare is over. The escaped poisonous Egyptian cobra for the Bronx Zoo has finally been found. The cobra, which had been missing for over a week, was found in a dark corner of the zoo’s reptile house. Workers at the zoo used every strategy they could to find the dangerous animals. Officials turned the heat heat in the exhibit up and laid out wood chips to try to bring the snake out of its hiding. Workers also used the smell of mice to try to find the snake. The snake was found in good condition, with no reported injuries. The snake had gained a tremendous amount of fame since it had gone missing, due to the intense media coverage. The snake also grew in fame due to its fake twitter account and urban legends that were started. With the cobra found, New York does not have to worry about a wild snake roaming the streets.

Shaka Smart Shocking the World

After the 68 teams were selected for the men’s NCAA basketball tournament, experts, fans and other teams were outraged at the selection of Virginia Commonwealth University basketball team. People said they were unqualified and not good enough to be in the tournament. However, on the eve of the final four this mid-major school is one of the four schools remaining. This is in large part to the young and talented head coach of VCU, Shaka Smart. He turned the team from one of the “last four in”, to the “last four left”. The only thing that is more remarkable than the teams story is Shaka Smart’s story. Smart turned down the opportunity to attend Harvard and Yale to pursue his dream of playing college basketball at Kenyon College. However the tournament ends  for the VCU Rams, they will be remembered as one of the best Cinderella teams in tournament history.

Distracted by Sheen

This week you cannot go anywhere without hearing about Charlie Sheen. Every news network and talk show is talking about Charlie Sheen, from Conan to Katie Couric. If you try to avoid hearing about him on television, the internet is not much better. His interviews, videos, and quotes are everywhere. When you talk to people on the street, it is not much better, the only thing people want to talk about is Charlie Sheen. However crazy, sad, entertaining it may be, is his story the most important new item going on in the world today? Aren’t there other issues in the world that we should all be talking about? In my belief, problems in Libya and Egypt should be the dominant stories not Charlie Sheen. Although I am interested in the Sheen story,I do not think it should dominate the news. Over the next couple of weeks it will be interesting to see what will get more coverage, Charlie Sheen problems or problems that affect the world.

One of the most popular shows on television will be experiencing a big change this season. The star of The Office, Steve Carell, will be leave the show permanently towards the end of the season. This means that Michael Scott will be releasing his control of his Dunder Mifflin branch. This leaves office fans wondering who will take over for Michael Scott. Rumors have been circulating for months as to who will take over. Some of the outside possiblies include Ricky Gervais and Will Ferrell. Gervais has long been thought of as the replacement for Scott because he played a similar role of the British version of The Office. He has also already appeared on an episode this season. Ferrell is another possibility to take over. He has already signed up to appear in four episodes this season, and has not ruled out a longer stay on the show. Most likely, Scotts job will go to someone already working in the office. Darryl, Dwight, Ryan, and Kelly have all been called possibilities to take over by the producers of the show, with Kelly emerging as the favorite. Whoever takes over Office fans will continue to show their love for the show and its characters.
