Tax Day Is Not Today

Posted: April 15, 2011 by fmed77 in Uncategorized

Although today is April 15, it is not Tax Day. In the beginning of the year, the IRS declared that Monday April 18 will be Tax Day.

Unless it’s a holiday or a weekend, Tax Day is always on the 15th, but this year, there is an exception. Today, Washington D.C. is celebrating Emancipation Day (which has been a holiday in D.C. since 2005). Normally, it is observed on the 16th, but because the 16th is a Saturday, it is being observed today. So because the holiday that is really tomorrow has now been moved to today, Tax Day gets postponed until Monday as a result.

So, Tax Day is now the 18th because of a technicality of sorts. If Emancipation Day had stayed at its original day on the 16th, then Tax Day would be today.

For those of you who are just finding out now and who planned on rushing to the Post Office today to wait in line, you’re in luck, because now you won’t have procrastinated after all!
