While flipping through the channels yesterday, I happened to come across “The Oprah Winfrey Show”, which I rarely ever watch, but this show pulled me in from the start. Oprah’s guest was Marie Walsh, aka Susan LeFevre, who had escaped from prison 32 years before and was living as a fugitive with a husband and family, and none of them knew about it!

She revealed to Oprah that at 19 (in 1975) she was arrested for selling heroin to an undercover police officer, and was sentenced to 10-20 years in prison. After serving a little over a year, her grandfather helped her to escape, and she fled out west to California where she assumed a new identity.

Marie, aka Susan, said she has changed some of the numbers on her social security number and would have to move from job to job, until she met her future husband Alan. They were married in the mid 80s and had 3 children, and none of them knew of her secret past until she was arrested in 2008 and had to serve 13 months in prison. She was released in 2009, and since, her and her family have tried to move forward from her tumultuous past.
