The Media View of the Crisis in Japan

If you have been watching the news at all recently, you may have noticed the top story on every channel all day long is the effects of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. One of the biggest stories is how the nuclear reactors have become dangerous and are leaking radiation into the air.  These recent events are a tragedy. However, the media is overplaying the events. This is basically the only story being covered on the news. It is like there is a competition between news shows as to who can air the most time on the same story. There are other events going on around the world that deserve the public’s attention.

Why are the “big” news stories covered for so long and so drawn out? Is that what people really want to see everyday? I would argue not.
