Second Life: Friend or Foe?

Second Life is a 3D virtual world where users can create an avatar and interact with other users.  Users can potentially go anywhere in the world by just typing in a destination and clicking the launch button. Unlike real life, Second Life allows avatars to live under water and fly and even visit made up locations.

I had never heard of Second Life until this past week. My suitemate is taking a BioPsych class and the professor required them to make a Second Life account. If they were ever to have a snow day, the class would meet up virtually in a classroom the professor built on Second Life. I thought it was ridiculous, but sure enough the professor was ready to go in the virtual classroom on this past snow day. She stood at the front of the class and asked if the students had their textbooks. She was literally teaching a class virtually through avatars (voices are used). It was one of the weirdest things I have ever seen.

Besides using Second Life for schooling purposes, many people use it for pleasure. However, how much is too much? There ‘s a lot of controversy over Second Life since users are able to rob, steal, kill and even steal other avatars souls for free guns (which you can use to rob other avatars with). If you really want, you can even become a striper or a vampire. People develop strange addictions to the site as well.  I’m sure there is so much more to Second Life that I have not seen yet, but it’s just a little too creepy for me.
